Schedule a Tour of the Battle of Westport Visitor Center

The  Battle of Westport Museum has moved out of the Harris-Kearney House and is temporarily closed until we find a suitable location.

Schedule a Guided Battlefield Tour

The Battle of Westport took place over three days in an area that encompasses around 35 square miles. So our standard  tour only covers a small portion of the battlefield.

In collaboration with Kansas City Parks and Recreation, the Monnett Battle of Westport Fund have made some great strides in the restoration of the Big Blue Battlefield. This tour lasts around three hours and provides an in-depth walking experience visiting different locations on the Big Blue Battlefield. Overall, there is about one and a half miles of walking.

There is a minimal amount of driving on this tour, although it is possible to limit the off trail walking and drive to some locations. About half of the walking is on concrete paved trails. The rest is off trail because the battlefield restoration is a work in progress.

  1. Starts on the battlefield at 5951 Manchester Trafficway, Kansas City, MO 64130, a small warehouse owned by the Monnett Battle of Westport Fund. There is a small parking lot on the south side of the warehouse where we meet, and the tour guide provides an introductory overview of the battle.
  2. After the introductory overview, we drive (about 5 minutes) to east side of Blue River, park and walk up the Historic Byram's Ford Road. About 200 yards, off trail, uneven ground, moderately strenuous.
  3. Then we walk down to Byram's Ford. About 300 yards, concrete trail, easy walk.
  4. We return to the vehicle and drive back to west side of river and park at warehouse.
  5. We walk down to Byram's Ford on the west side of the river. About 500 yards, off trail, through a field.
  6. We return to the parking lot and walk over to the bottom of Bloody Hill. We then proceed to walk to the top of Bloody Hill. About 800-900 yards, combination of off trail and paved roads/trails. Walking up Bloody Hill (off trail) gives you a sense of what the attackers faced during the battle.
  7. Return to the parking lot and end the tour.

We can customize a tour to your specifications:

  • Visit Brush Creek battlefield area
  • Visit Little Blue River battlefield
  • Visit Independence battlefield
  • Visit Mockbee Farm battlefield
  • Take route followed by Confederate wagon train from Independence to New Santa Fe.
